One of the biggest appeals of soft surface flooring is its ability to provide a soft, warm feeling underfoot. But, of course, you also want elegance, durability, a long lifespan, and easy cleanability.
Pile is a term you'll frequently hear when shopping for carpeting. It simply refers to how the fibers are attached to the backing. Choosing a pile is a matter of personal taste, needs, and lifestyle.
All rugs begin the process as a looped pile
Berber styles and level loop carpets are examples of this construction. They are both highly durable and easy to keep clean, making them ideal for high-traffic areas.
In a looped pile, uncut fibers are attached to the backing. They either remain that way or are cut into piles of various heights.
When they’re cut
At this point, we invite you to come into our carpet store. You’ll see many styles and colors.
Primary cut piles have short, evenly chopped fibers and a fuzzy look. This rug is durable, easy to clean, and acceptable for any traffic level.
High piles have long, loose fibers like the shag. Often called "sheepdog rugs," they require a little more TLC to keep clean. That makes them best for low-traffic areas, like the bedroom.
Sometimes they'll have additional features. For example, the Saxony is a medium pile rug with a plush or trackless texture. A plush texture shows footprints and vacuum marks. Best to keep this in low-traffic areas.
A Saxony trackless floor covering, however, hides all marks. It is used anywhere.
Frieze rugs are relatively high piles, but the fibers are twisted so tightly they curl. This durable rug has a more informal look, making it ideal for family rooms.
Low pile rugs: the easiest to clean and most durable
They’re also stylish, soft, and great for allergy sufferers. That's because they have such easy cleanability; the short fibers don't shed, so there's nothing to breathe in.
